Maybe it’s your new book, an upcoming workshop, or a special course.

And you know that getting people in your network to tell others about it is a great way to increase the reach about your offer and make sure more people know about it.

But in order for people to be willing to help you spread the word about your cool new thing, you must do two things:

1. Make it easy for them to do it

2. Give them many options to choose from

1. Make It Easy

You know how busy people are these days; even if they do want to help if you make it too complicated they simply aren’t going to do it.

You have to make is super simple for people who support your offer to share the information.

Yes, asking people to forward an e-mail to friends is easy enough but it does take time to think up who might be interested. And people don’t want to send promotions out to their friends too often using e-mail.

Plus there are fabulous alternatives to asking people to forward e-mails, namely using social media and content suggestions.

2. Give Lots of Options

You want to offer a range of options that take from just a few seconds up a couple of minutes. That way people can choose what works for them.

Let me share a fabulous example of a request for support that offers many options. Becky McCray, author of the recently published book Small Town Rules, created this fantastic website page to give several options to people for spreading the word.

Here are additional options per platform that make sharing simple and fast.

Facebook

Respond

For people who want to comment on or ‘Like’ what you’ve already posted about your offer it’s best to give them a direct link.

To get this direct link on Facebook, once you’ve posted the information click on the time stamp (which is in grey below the post, examples: ‘about an hour ago’ or date with time ‘March 20th at 3:30pm’) and then copy that url and paste it into a url shortener like bitly. This is for tidiness and tracking click throughs.

Initiate

For people who want to post the information directly on their own Facebook page give them two or three options for text they can copy and paste.

And also mention the option to write their own promo and which link to include with it.

Twitter

Respond

For people who want to ReTweet what you’ve already Tweeted about your offer it’s best to give them a direct link.

Here’s how you get a direct link to a particular Tweet then once you have the link, be sure to use a url shortener like bitly to shorten the link so you can track how many clicks it gets.

Initiate

For people who want to promote your offer with a Tweet directly from their own account you can give them two or three different versions to choose from and use http://clicktotweet.com/ to make it even easier (so they don’t have to copy and paste).

Here is one example (provide two or three to choose from):

Click here to Tweet the text below.

Ready to learn how to use Social Media? Check out this product http://bit.ly/mPwSr7 from @fireflycoaching

And also include an option for them to write their own Tweet with a link to include with the Tweet.

LinkedIn

Create two or three versions of text that people can copy and paste into their LinkedIn profile.

Also include the option for them to create their own update and give them the link to include with their update.

And if you’ve created a video for your offer be sure to add the option to share it on each of the platforms mentioned above. Here is an example of a video for an information product from Jo Parfitt and a video book trailer for Carolyn Vines’ book.

People love video and enjoy sharing it. Creating video is easier than you think, find out more here.

Don’t be shy, ask people to help you share your offer just be sure you follow the two rules to make it super simple and offer a variety of choices. Do that and you’ll be surprised how much help you’ll get.

So get to it and create your ‘spread the word’ guide, share it in an e-mail or on a website page, and revel in the success of your launch.

What is Pinterest? Well in case you haven’t heard all the buzz lately, it’s a fast growing new social network. According to Hubspot, “In December 2011, Pinterest made Hitwise’s list of the top ten social networks, sitting at #5 and beating out big names like LinkedIn and Google+.”

I know, I can hear you saying “I don’t have time for yet another social networking site.” But if it could help you grow your business would you be interested? Well it can, more on that in a minute. First let me tell you a bit about Pinterest.

If you’re a visual person like me, you’re going to love Pinterest. It’s all about sharing images by ‘Pinning’ them to your ‘Boards.’

You organize your ‘Pins’ by putting them on Boards you create and name. Other people can ‘Repin’ your Pins onto their Boards as well as ‘Like’, ‘Comment’ and share them on Twitter and Facebook.

It’s super easy to get started and I’ve got several resources to help you along scattered throughout this article.

Getting Started

First things first, you need to request an invitation. Just visit Pinterest and click on the button to request an invitation. Don’t worry, the process goes fairly quickly.

A great tip I picked up from the Hubspot report (see resource section below) is that once you get your invitation choose to register using your Twitter account and the same e-mail address you use for Twitter (not your Facebook account) so you can share your pins on Twitter. It’s not possible to use your Business Facebook account with Pinterest, only your Facebook Personal Profile. From there complete all of the profile information and you’re ready to get started.

Benefits of Using Pinterest

Besides the fact that it’s fun and addictive? One word, traffic. Serious traffic to your website. And more traffic means more clients. And who doesn’t want that?

You can monitor how much traffic you’re getting from Pinterest by using Google Analytics. This is a fabulous and free tool I hope you’re already using to monitor your website.

What to Pin

Pinterest is not meant to be used only for promotional purposes. Even the big brands are being creative about what they Pin.

As a small business owner you want to mix it up and have a good balance of fun and interesting information along with promotion of your products and services.

Use Pinterest to illustrate different aspects of your personality and your business.

What’s the right ratio? I always advise more value than promotion. Have a look at my Pinterest account to see the various boards I’ve created.

Actions to Take

1. Install the ‘Pin It’ button to your browser so you can start Pinning. Then create some Boards and start Pinning.

Pinterest will give you some ideas for Boards, feel free to change the names of the Boards to something unique and to add additional Boards. Think about creating Boards around specific topics that relate to your business.

2. Start following people. You can find people to follow using the ‘Find Friends’ drop down box under your name in the top right navigation.

You can also find people by browsing through Pins by going to Pinterest and clicking on ‘Everything’ right below the Pinterest logo. There you can also select specific categories to search.

3. Repin, Comment, and Like other people’s Pins. You don’t have to be following someone to do this. You also have the option to share each Pin on Facebook and Twitter.

4. Be sure to include the url to your Pin in the description box of each Pin. You can use a url shortener like bitly so the link looks tidy, and more importantly so that you can track the clicks. Just like on Twitter, you can also use hashtags in the description area.

5. Add a ‘Follow me on Pinterest’ button to your website.

6. Add the ‘Repin’ button to your blog posts. But before you do, make sure that you have designated a featured image for each post. Otherwise, it’s kind of pointless. More on that here.

7. Upload your videos to your Boards. If you post your videos in blog posts, it’s best to Repin them from your blog so that the traffic goes to your blog/website. If your videos are only on YouTube, you can Repin them directly from YouTube using the Repin button. Still haven’t started with video for your business? Please read this.

I hope you’re starting to see how you can use Pinterest to grow your business. As with most things that are new, the best way to learn is just to dive in and start using the it. So set aside some time to get started with Pinterest and watch your traffic grow.

Taking on the world of social media marketing can seem daunting. Sitting in front of your computer, or holding your smartphone, you can be at a loss for words, or unsure of your direction.

One way to get past that lost feeling is to pretend you are the owner of a small town store. Now, this is easy for me because I own a retail store in a small town, but you can imagine it, too.

1. Build Connections

Small town business owners spend a lot of their time talking one on one with customers, building connections. This is the opposite of the usual approach of broadcasting a message to a crowd. You can spend more of your online time focused on one on one interaction, talking with individual potential customers, building community. When you take this approach, you’ll never ignore a customer talking about you. You’ll always be friendly and respond. You’ll say hello, good morning, and how are you.

2. Get Involved

Small town business owners get involved in their communities. They participate in community projects, and they show up for events. You can do this online, too. Show up for online events like webinars and Twitter chats. Participate in community projects, like fund raisers and group writing projects.

3. Think Long Term

Small town business owners stay for the long term. They get to know everyone in town, sometimes for generations. You can do this online. Don’t just hit and run, dropping an ad on a network and never returning or never interacting. Think about building a little storefront there long term. Most people tend to be too quick to chase the next shiny thing or new network, so better for you to tend to be a long term member of a community.

4. Be Honest

Small town business owners are honest. If you drop a $20 bill in their store, they’ll return it to you. You should be just as honest online. Don’t shade the truth or hide behind anonymity. Presume any dishonesty will be found out, just like it would in a small town.

5. Look Out for Your Community

Small town business owners watch out for their community and their neighbors. You can, too, online. If you hear of a job opportunity or a client that isn’t a good match for you, pass the opportunity along. If you know of a bad deal, give others a warning.

6. Be Helpful

Small town business owners are helpful. They’ll carry your purchases to your car, keep the items you like as a special favor, and some will even go so far as to offer to take in a competitor who lost their building in a fire. You can benefit from a helpful attitude online. Answer questions and share useful information. You don’t have to give away your work for free, but you can always have a helpful attitude.

There’s a lot more I could say about how to act like a small town business owner, but I bet you have the idea now. So, open up your own little store in your mind, and start acting like a small town business owner, if you want to succeed.

Social media isn’t about doing something that different than what you’re already doing. It’s simply an extension of what you’re already doing.

Speaking as a marketing strategy is the same concept as creating videos. Writing compares to blogging. And if you are into networking; Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn are just additional ways to network.

When I talk about Social Media I’m referring specifically to these five platforms: Blogging, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Video/YouTube.

Here are five things you’re missing out on if you’re not using social media.

Visibility

If you’re not using social media you’re limiting the visibility of your content. For example, if you are not posting your ezine on your blog and then posting a link to that blog on Twitter and LinkedIn you are missing out on the opportunity to reach more people and share your content with a bigger audience, more visibility.

And in case you’re wondering, it is OK to share the same information across platforms. Repetition is not a bad thing and it’s fine if someone sees it on more than one platform.

The more people who see your content, and your main call to action, the more you will build your list and make more money.

Leverage

If you’re not using social media you’re not able to leverage your content to the maximum. People like to consume information in different formats and as mentioned, repetition is powerful for learning.

You can take content you’ve created and convert it into many formats.

For example, you can take the content from an article you’ve written and create a video about it.

You could take that same article and extract interesting short quotes to Tweet. You can take that short quote and not only tweet it but share it on Facebook and LinkedIn as well.

You can do this easily from one place by using either HootSuite or TweetDeck. That way you save time and you don’t have to go to each individual platform.

You could also take the content from that same article and turn it into an audio recording. The options are limitless.

Saving Money

The cost of using social media doesn’t get much better than free. This is amazing. Yes it takes time and so does any marketing activity. But think about some of the “traditional” marketing activities. They cost time AND money.

When you go to an in person networking event there are multiple costs involved beyond the time of just attending. There’s also the time it takes for: preparation, follow up, and transportation. As well as costs related to membership fee and travel costs.

In addition to all of the platforms being free, many of them provide free valuable information and statistics. The insights you can get from each of the social media platforms are remarkable.

For example on Facebook, you can find out who is interacting with you by gender, age, location, and more.

And there are also free resources that will let you measure your influence online like Klout and Proskore.

Reach

Using social media extends your reach. You can connect with people you would otherwise never have the chance to connect with.

And you can build relationships with them over time. This can lead to more clients, more referrals, and new partnerships.

Community

You can build communities that are able to connect and interact with each other on social media.

You get to provide valuable information for your community as well as ask your community to share information and invite them talk with each other.

You can also ask your communities for feedback on your ideas, like naming products or choosing a new service. This is called crowdsourcing. Involving your community with your business also helps create more loyalty.

You will also learn things from the communities you create. Things about your industry and your clients so that you’ll be a better resource for your clients and be able to make products and services they really want.

OK, let’s talk about the 3 Biggest Objections to using social media that I hear.

Social Media takes too much time. The thing is that all marketing takes time, anything valuable worth doing will take time. I really believe you can’t afford not to do it. It’s about understanding how to use it effectively. If you’re thinking you tried it and it didn’t work then you weren’t doing it right.

Social Media is too complicated. Trust me; I am not a super technically savvy person. I know just enough to do what I need to get done. And if you get stuck, there are always people who can help you. It’s like many things, the more you do it the easier it gets. There is a ton of information available and it’s worth taking the time to learn how to do it and what kind of content to share.

Social media can’t be measured. Actually the opposite of this is true. It is very measurable, even more so than some traditional marketing strategies like advertising on the radio or in magazines. You can use a free monitoring tool like Google Analytics on your website to see exactly where leads are coming from and how many there are.

I hope you’re starting to see how using social media can help you attract more clients and grow your business. Make the decision to get started today, you won’t regret it. For even more detail on this topic, listen to the audio recording.

Social media is just another way to market your business and it has a ton of amazing benefits.

Either you’re thinking about getting started with Social Media or you’ve already dipped your toe into this amazing opportunity.

But something is holding you back, you’re still not quite convinced that it is a valuable way to spend your resources and haven’t committed to doing it.

So I decided to extract some of the most interesting highlights (non-verbatim) and share them with you in case you don’t have 60 minutes to listen to the interview right now (and I highly recommend you listen to the entire interview when you can).

Hootsuite just surpassed 3 million users in 3 years so Ryan knows what he is doing. And Laura is an expert entrepreneur herself who asks some fabulous questions, so between the two of them there’s a lot of sound advice here.

What’s your opinion on outsourcing social media?

Play to your strengths and if you need help with strategy get it. Hootsuite manages all of their social media in house.

Laura sees it as unsuccessful when a business has no involvement in their social media campaigns because part of social media is partially about customer service. Social media is a two way channel and it can be hard for a third party to answer questions about your company.

Using a scheduling tool, like Hootsuite, will help you save time as a small business owner.

What is the best time to post on Twitter and Facebook?

Friday at 1:00 pm Pacific Standard Time (PST)

Should you schedule social media?

Social media expert Scott Stratten (@unmarketing) of UnMarketing is someone Laura really respects and he is strongly opposed to scheduling social media. Laura disagrees; she schedules a lot on social media and then follows up with live responses.

Ryan says scheduling is a must have that has been proven to be very effective. And it also depends, if you’re asking questions you need to be there to respond.

How frequently should a small business owner post on Twitter and Facebook?

It depends; listen to your friends and followers. There isn’t one right answer.

What about Google+?

Google+ is important for marketing for small business owners and a major competitor in social media. Their AdWords product is really smart and tailored to small and medium business. Hootsuite is working very hard to add Google+ to their service. It’s our top requested user feature.

Should you be on Twitter as your brand, yourself, or both?

Tough question, it depends and there’s no right answer. If you are the brand or celebrity it makes sense to use yourself. I chose to do both, create my own account and a Hootsuite account.

Do you think small business owners should create an iPhone app?

It’s not a good strategy in a most cases (unless your business is building an app). Web standard html optimized for mobile is probably a better strategy.

What is your opinion of Klout and the concept of scoring people’s success?

I really like Klout, they’ve done a great job in owning the space of identifying influencers on social media. It’s a great way to filter people based on similar interests.

Does content delivered through a 3rd party like Hootsuite get more interaction than content that’s posted directly to each platform?

No, it’s exactly the same.

Is it OK to post the exact same content at the exact same time to Twitter, Facebook and Google+ or do you need to modify?

It depends on how much time you have. I don’t think it will penalize you in terms of engagement if you do this. And if you do have the time to customize, it can have value. If you had a choice of not posting because it takes too much time to customize it’s better to get the content out so make it the same and send it out. Getting the content out is the most important.

What is a success story about someone who has used Hootsuite and changed their business?

Check out Hootsuite Library for white papers and case studies.

What’s next for Hootsuite?

The future of Hootsuite includes: development in mobile – push notifications, more support for teams, and making engagement with customers easier.

You are sitting on a pile of money and you don’t even know it.

You’re an expert in your business or industry and you have an ocean of content that you’ve created.

But you’re not leveraging it in the most profitable way.

Different people like to learn using different formats. In addition, many people like to consume the same information in various formats.

My challenge to you is to identify one piece of your existing content and put it into one new format. This will create an additional revenue stream for your business.

It’s a good idea to choose content from one of your most profitable revenue streams. You can also use this same concept for your valuable free giveaway.

Content

Take three minutes right now and take a quick tour of your computer hard drive and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Uh huh, you forgot about all that great stuff right?

In addition to raw content you have, it’s quite likely that you’ve already created some kind of information product or offer that you’re currently selling on your website.

You can also take existing content and combine it with other existing content to create a new combination of information.

In any case, you have material that is ready to be re-formatted into a new revenue stream that will increase your profits.

Formats

There are a myriad of formats you can use to create your new offer. Please have a look at the list below to get inspired.

E-book

E-course using autorepsonders

Teleseminar

Webinar

Coaching: one-on-one, group, e-mail

Audio course

Video course

Course that combines audio, video and a pdf (can be electronic or physical)

Printed book or workbook

In person workshop/training/retreat

Assessment

Examples

Here are some examples to get headed in the right direction. So if you have a popular e-book that you sell in a pdf format why not record an audio version of it?

If you have a popular in-person workshop you can turn that content into and audio file, create a video, or even offer a webinar (which will save you money on renting the room and increase the possibility for participation since people don’t have to travel).

You could take an audio course and turn it into an e-course.

Whatever you create, be sure to let your tribe know about your new offering. And remember, mentioning your new offer in your ezine once is not enough.

You have to make some waves about it and mention it several times across many channels including social media.

I hope you’ve got some fantastic ideas for your business. Don’t delay; recycle your fabulous content into a new offer that your clients will be thrilled to buy.
